Our History & Impact

Live in Green was founded in 2016 by Solomon Bhaghabhonerano, a refugee driven by a deep commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable livelihoods. Solomon’s journey began long before Live in Green—having fled conflict and resettled in Kyaka II, he saw firsthand the widespread deforestation caused by firewood dependency, as well as the struggles of refugees in accessing clean energy and sustainable farming resources. His passion led him to pursue a degree in forestry and natural science at Makerere University, equipping him with the knowledge and expertise to implement green solutions in refugee settlements. Determined to make a difference, Solomon started Live in Green with a small tree nursery, distributing seedlings to schools in Kyaka II. His work quickly gained recognition, and in 2017, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) provided funding to support an agroforestry project. This initiative grew into one of the largest tree nurseries in the settlement, distributing over 1.8 million tree seedlings to date. Live in Green’s efforts contributed to the restoration of 21 hectares of forested land with the help of refugees and host communities.

Beyond reforestation, Solomon saw the urgent need for clean energy alternatives. In 2021, he launched a briquette-making initiative, training over 2,000 beneficiaries in Kyaka II on producing sustainable briquettes as an alternative to firewood. Since then, Live in Green has distributed over 3 tons of briquettes and more than 1,000 energy-efficient cooking stoves, significantly reducing firewood dependency. Through partnerships with organizations such as the Danish Refugee Council, Windle International Uganda, ASHDEN, and Joint Effort to Save the Environment (JESE), Live in Green has expanded its impact beyond Kyaka II, supporting broader agroforestry and clean energy programs across Uganda. Today, under Solomon’s leadership, Live in Green continues to drive environmental transformation, integrating waste management, clean energy, and agroecology to improve the livelihoods of refugees and host communities. His unwavering vision and dedication serve as an inspiration, proving that even in the most challenging circumstances, sustainable solutions can create lasting change.
